まちなみ逍遙

八女市の中心市街地・福島は天正15年(1587)筑紫広門が築いた福島城を、慶長5年(1600)関が原の戦いで功を上げ、筑後一円32万5千石（柳河 城を本拠とした）に抜擢された田中吉政が、支城として大修築し、城下町をつくった後、大きく栄える。福島城は三重の堀によって囲み、中堀・外堀の南半には 城を迂回する往還道路に沿って「町人地」を配したと考えられる。町人地の敷地はこの往還道路と中堀・外堀の間に短冊状に地割がなされている。
元和6年(1620)当地は久留米藩有馬豊氏の支配下となり、福島城は廃城となったが、町人地はその後も八女地方の交通の要衝の地として、また、経済の 中心地として発展する。福島は城下町としては短期間であったが、その間に都市の主要な骨格ができたと思われ、今も本丸跡、城堀跡の水路、屈曲した道路網等 当時の面影を残している。
近世以降八女地方は、和紙、ハゼ蝋、提灯、仏壇、石工品、茶など様々な特産品の開発やそれを素材とした工芸品の創作に取り組んできた。農産物の生産・流通の拠点であることに加え、積極的な商工業の振興による富の蓄積で重厚な商家が連続する町並みを形成していった。

From 1587 to 1620, in Yame-Fukushima ,Yoshimasa Tanaka ( daimyo,Japanese feudal lord）,restored the Fukushima-jo Castle , and built the foundation of the castle town for Fukushima-jo Castle through urban development and zoning (the distinct features of the castle town can be found today in the place names and hook-shaped roads that still remain in the ward).constructed the castle-town.
In the year 1620, Fukushima-jo Castle was abolished by the Ikkoku Ichijo Rei (Law of One Castle per Province).
After the early-modern times, Yame district flourished as the producer and the collection center of the farm products,and as the main production area of the green tea,Japanese paper, and so on.
That contributed to the development of the merchant town.
