In 2009,it was esignated as the Nation’s Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings.
During the Edo period,it belonged to Uwajima Province, and flourished as the collection center of agricultural products,Japanese cypress wood and so on in Uwa Basin,and as the temple town of Genkozan Meisekiji-temple(the 43rd temple of Shikoku Pilgrimage).
Now,it is a quiet town with a wealth of nature,and many tasteful houses still remain as it were.

愛媛県西予市宇和町卯之町のまちなみです。
このまちなみは，平成２１年１２月８日に，重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に指定されました。
卯之町は，江戸時代には宇和島藩に属し，宇和盆地の農産物や宇和檜の集散地として，および，四国霊場４３番札所，源光山明石寺の門前町として繁栄したそうです。
今はひっそりした小さな町ですが，江戸時代のしっとりとした町並みが美しく残っています。
