Uchiko flourished as the place of production of Japanese wax ( vegetable tallow ) during the Meiji period through the Taisho period (about 19th century). Some merchants of Japanese wax industry in Uchiko became very wealthy and influential, so they used to build majestic residences and facilities.
But the wax industry declined in around 1920’s, and now, only Kamihaga residence still remain as it was.
Youkaichi area and Gokoku area are also designated as National Preservation Districts for Important Traditional Buildings.

Uchiko-za, this wooden theatre, came to be constructed in an era made prosperous by the production of Japanese wax ( February 1916 ). In the agricultural slack season, Kabuki, Bungaku, Rakugo (traditional comic storytelling) programs were performed at this theatre.

春が深まるなか，一転して氷雨に見舞われた，雨に煙る内子のまちなみです。
内子は，明治期から大正時代にかけて，木蝋生産で大いに栄えました。
本芳我家，上芳我家といった製蝋業者が経済的繁栄を享受し，見事な屋敷や製造所をいくつも構えたそうです。
しかしながら，1920年代に入り製蝋業が廃れるに伴い，これらの屋敷群は徐々に姿を消し，今は上芳我家の屋敷のみが住宅と製蝋施設，そして敷地を往時のままに一体として遺しています。
浅黄色と白漆喰で塗りごめられた重厚な外壁が趣を醸し出している街並みです。
八日市・護国地区の街並みは、重要伝統的建物群保存地区に指定されています。

立派な木造の劇場，「内子座」は，大正５年２月に，大正天皇の即位を祝して建造されたそうです。農閑期には，歌舞伎や文楽，落語などが多く演じられていたそうです。
現在，内子町の方々の熱意により復元されたこの劇場は，今も時折催事に使われているそうです。
