まちなみ逍遙

In the Edo period, Tochigi-City flourished as the staging post on the Nikko-Reiheishi Kaido Road, and as the center of water transportation system of Uzuma-River.
The Imperial messenger for making the offering to Nikko Toshogu Shrine was called Reiheishi.

栃木宿は，江戸時代より例幣使街道（朝廷から日光東照宮の大祭に派遣された奉幣使の通り道）の宿場町として，また巴波川（うずまがわ）の舟運で栄えた問屋町として大いに栄え，北関東の商都と呼ばれました。
例幣使街道は、例幣使のほか，日光東照宮に参拝する西国の諸大名も通り、賑わいを見せたといいます。
