まちなみ逍遙

Sousse (Arabic: سوسة ) , called “the Pearl of the Sahel”, is a city in Tunisia, located 140 kilometers (87 miles) south of the capital Tunis.
A Medina, surrounded by its city walls and fortifications, is of historical interest.
The Medina includes open and covered bazaars (souks). Buildings of historical interest include the ribat castle, the central mosque, and a historical museum in the Casbah with mosaics from the area’s many Roman villas.
UNESCO declared the medina of Sousse a World Heritage Site in 1988.

チュニジア共和国の首都チュニスから，約140キロ南方の海岸線に位置するチュニジア第三の都市，スースの旧市街（メディナ）の町並みです。
スースはその美しさから，しばしば　”サヘルの真珠”　と呼ばれています。
今もなお完全な姿で残る頑丈な城壁のなかに息づく旧市街（メディナ）は，世界遺産に登録されています。

スースへは，首都チュニスから汽車で2時間半程度（片道）で訪れることができますが，汽車の定時運行への信頼性が低いため，訪れる際には移動時間に余裕を持たせることをお勧めします。（私が訪問した年末も，往路は1時間遅れ，復路は3時間遅れでした）。
