まちなみ逍遙

The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty, now in Uzbekistan. The name Rēgistan (ریگستان) means “Sandy place” or “desert” in Persian.

Samarkand is most noted for its central position on the Silk Road between China and the West, and for being an Islamic centre for scholarly study. In the 14th century it became the capital of the empire of Timur (Tamerlane) and is the site of his mausoleum (the Gur-e Amir). The Bibi-Khanym Mosque (a modern replica) remains one of the city’s most notable landmarks. The Registan was the ancient center of the city. The city has carefully preserved the traditions of ancient crafts: embroidery, gold embroidery, silk weaving, engraving on copper, ceramics, carving and painting on wood.
In 2001, UNESCO added the city to its World Heritage List as Samarkand – Crossroads of Cultures.

古より，シルクロードの要衝，砂漠の十字路として繁栄を享受した，「青の都」サマルカンドです。
イスラム文化の発信地でもあったこの街は，中心のレギスタン広場以外にも多くの見どころがあり，イスラム建築の美しさ，イスラム美術の精緻さには心を奪われます。
なお，レギスタン広場で１人でぽつんと佇んでいると，５ドル前後の賄賂を要求してくる警察官がいますが，この賄賂を支払えばミナレット（塔）に登らせて貰えます(笑)。
